Stepping onto the stage before attorneys and IP professionals at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) Bar Association 2025 Annual Conference was a defining moment in my journey—one that would have made my mentors and father proud. This experience solidified my self-acceptance, not from an ego-driven perspective, but from a deep understanding that I am enough. Once, the thought of moderating a panel in the patent space felt daunting and nearly impossible, but my resilience propelled me forward. This moment transcended mere public speaking; it was a powerful testament to personal growth, my commitment to overcoming fear, and a shift from self-consciousness to service. By continuously pushing my limits, I honor the values ingrained in me by my parents, demonstrating that resilience and persistence can open doors to new opportunities.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of the VPG Team, my esteemed panelists, the Conference Committee leadership, and the collegial spirit of the association.
Here are four reflections that I hope to inspire others to take risks despite their fears:
1. Personal Growth Through Challenge
Preparing for this panel was an exhilarating leap out of my comfort zone. I told our co-chairs, "I love a good challenge," but it felt like a series of mini tests. I nearly threw in the towel while coordinating panelists, refining topics, and crafting materials for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit. My opening line, “You should know that I am not an attorney,” was inspired by Nick Groombridge, which eased my nerves and established a sense of belonging among patent litigators, boosting my confidence.
2. Conquering the Fear of Public Speaking
Fear is natural, but preparation turns it into fuel for confidence! With insights from Adam Grant and Simon Sinek for the past few years, I prepared to engage in this conversation of “once in a lifetime” in one hour. Forty-five minutes before we took the stage, the team gathered to discuss our approach. When the panelists heard my ChatGPT opener for the first time, their smiles eased my anxiety. Shifting focus from nerves to delivering value transformed the experience. Embracing who we are fostered a sense of belonging, leading to moments of laughter and deeper discussions about leadership and innovation.
3. It’s All About Serving the Audience

In high-stakes industries, it’s easy to get caught up in perceptions. After starting my VPG journey, I learned how heavy that pressure can weigh on us. Instead of focusing on perfection, I shifted to asking how I could serve. I invited a 23-year-old teammate to join me and capture the moment. Her enthusiastic support enhanced the experience, making it less about "me" and more about connection. I’ve learned that being “we-focused” enriches our journey as leaders.
4. Taking Each Step as a ‘Take 2’
Life doesn’t always offer second chances, but every speaking opportunity grants us a moment to refine our skills and grow. A mentor once noted they had never seen me “aesthetically happy.” This sparked reflection, leading me to question, “What makes me truly happy?” While I haven’t yet found all the answers, I’m closer to contentment than ever. Viewing life as a continuous learning experience encourages me to turn fear into excitement. If I don’t succeed the first time, I’ll take notes, learn, and keep pushing forward.
Moderating this panel symbolized a personal transformation for me. Embracing each experience helps shape who we are and who we aspire to be. The best part? This is just the beginning of my own "Take 2" in this vibrant journey of life—who’s with me?
